The Enhanced Evap system can detect purge flow and system leaks by using purge and vent solenoids, canister close valves(CCV) and a fuel tank pressure sensor(FTP) to test the system. Depending on the manufacturer, some of these systems test when the key is turned off and all of these systems include a readiness monitor. This system is required on 1998 and newer vehicles.

On the Non Enhanced Evap system, it is limited to detecting purge flow but cannot check the system for leaks. An additional drawback is sometimes the ECM cannot confirm that the purge flow actually occurred. This system does not include a readiness monitor and is found on various 1996 and 1997 year vehicles.
